Programs like Dirt Girls are needed to close the gender gap in STEM. As scientists wrestle with some of the most pressing problems of the 21st century, we cannot underestimate the advantages of a female point of view.

Too often young girls are discouraged in school and in society from exploring their curiosity, from finding their voice, and from becoming leaders in fields that have been historically dominated by men.

In 2021, the pandemic-proof Dirt Girls Grow Indoors provided 100 plants, 36 virtual sessions, one in-person field trip, and three Saturday park meetups. These opportunities taught participants to care for plants, themselves, and each other when social connection was missing.
